In Conversation: Rebecca Hughes Design
Rebecca sat down with Rupert to share her experiences within the interior design industry and explore the relationship between maker and designer.
How did you first enter the design world?
My first job was as an interior design assistant for Louise Jones, Founder of Fairfax Jones. I worked my way up, and my time with Louise was invaluable.
When did you found your studio?
I founded the studio in 2014. Since its establishment, our team has grown from strength to strength. We now have numerous projects in the pipeline, both in the UK and internationally. Currently, we are completing several projects in London, alongside Norfolk and Monaco. It is an exciting time.
As a design studio, how would you describe your style and ethos?
We are a London-based, luxury design studio that provides bespoke services from project conception to completion. I am passionate that interiors should authentically reflect those who inhabit them – as a studio, we really enjoy getting to understand our clients and what motivates their lifestyle choices and personal style.
I tend to embrace classic English influences with a relaxed, layered approach – creating spaces that feel effortless and comfortable yet still beautifully curated. I often mix a variety of periods, materials, textures, and patterns to create a layered look, making a space feel like it has organically evolved over time. I’m a firm believer that design should have longevity, rather than feeling too trend driven.
I don't get offended easily and find that the best client relationships are based on honesty, clear communication, and collaboration. My end goal is always to create a space that feels authentic to its owner and brings them joy.
What role do decorative pieces such as furniture, mirrors, cabinets play in your design?
Adding decorative pieces to a home is a wonderful way of bringing personality and character into a space. Whether it is an antique mirror, a striking cabinet or a distinctive piece of furniture, by making bolder choices, these pieces can go a long way and completely transform a space. Mixing pieces from a range of periods is a brilliant way to create a layered look, making a home feel like it has organically evolved over time. This juxtaposition offers the best of both worlds - the cosiness of traditional style and the crispness of contemporary design all in one harmonious space.
I also love to mix a range of materials to create engaging, tactile spaces – such as polished plaster, silk wall coverings, and gilded antique mirrors. I’m a firm believer that natural materials are timeless – they possess an inherent beauty that transcends temporary trends. Aged timber, antique brass, linen, and wool, for example, create refined and understated, luxurious schemes.
How important is craftsmanship to you?
I’m a firm believer that design should have longevity, rather than feeling too trend-driven. As a studio, we prioritise British craftsmanship that has been designed to stand the test of time. We want the spaces we design to be loved for years, and that means investing in the best. Although that occasionally comes with a price tag, I promise you won’t regret investing in a beautiful chest of drawers or a bespoke dining table that can be handed down to your children.
How do you choose your suppliers?
A reliable team and trustworthy suppliers are essential for smooth project delivery. Since founding the studio in 2014, I have developed a strong network of dependable suppliers, primarily through word-of-mouth recommendations. I also love discovering new products and brands. Today, I feel lucky with the trusted network of sources I have built up.
We’ve had the pleasure of featuring in a few of your projects. What role have the Rupert Bevan pieces played in the design scheme of these projects?
As the pieces are completely bespoke and the team are artisans in their own right, each Rupert Bevan pieces give us the freedom to express our ideas. Be it through new finishes or materials. The pieces go beyond the expected. Rather than simply being wall coverings, they utterly transform a space.
Working with the Rupert Bevan team is also extremely collaborative. We discuss ideas and come up with creative solutions together.
If you could have one piece from Rupert Bevan that you could not live without, what would it be?
I absolutely love the Vero Side Table. We have it earmarked for several upcoming projects.
