Craftsmanship

At Rupert Bevan we place great importance on local manufacture. Our design studio and workshops based in picturesque Shropshire, make an ideal location for Britain’s craft traditions to continue to evolve and thrive.

With over 10,000 sq ft of converted barn space, our workshops house a metal workshop, glass workshop, wood workshop, finishing workshop and design studio.

Metal Workshop

The metal workshop houses turning and milling machines with a large selection of tools that we use to create our engineered components, brackets and handles. By way of tig welding we can fabricate large frameworks as well as small-scale sculpture. The sheet metal area also provides space where we can cut and fold thin sections to create items from a small tray to a large brass wrapped table top or door.

The workshop is also equipped with what we call a “grinding room” where we can create our beautifully textured finishes with an assortment of abrasive cutting tools with the safety of dust extraction.

We work with a variety of different metals including, brass, steel, aluminum, copper, zinc and many more.

Wood Workshop

Our wood workshop accommodates large scale installations and beautiful timbers. Timbers such as oak, walnut, beech, poplar, sapele, eucalyptus and burr.

We take pride in using traditional skills, these include the tools we use such as planes, hand saws, chisels, marking tools, cabinet scrapers and many more.

Glass Workshop

As one of the few remaining glass workshops in the UK to silver our own glass we have become renowned for our antiqued mirror glass.

We specialise in the production of mirrors using traditional hand silvering techniques, created using a recipe which we have perfected over time. Antiqued mirror glass is created by applying alkaline solutions to the silvered surface by way of spraying, sponging or painting in a controlled environment.

We are also able to sandblast or sand carve glass using stencils to create patterns on the glass to be carved away or simply frosted. Other techniques include cutting and shaping a sheet of glass or very delicate cathedral glass using the traditional method of by hand with a diamond cutter.

Finishing Workshop

Our finishing workshop allows us to complete a piece with utmost detail, this includes hand patinating, timber staining, vellum pressing, fabric wrapping and much more.

Within our finishing workshop we also have a spray booth for spray lacquering of paints and clear lacquers in various sheens as well as metal lacquering.

Traditional finishing techniques include hand painting, traditional french polishing, timber waxing, metal polishing and leather pressing.
